Since 2016, BISC has worked with campaign leaders to explore and analyze critical learnings, challenges, and opportunities from both proactive and defensive ballot measure campaigns to build durable wins. In this session, we’ll hear from BISC and campaign leaders that have engaged in these extensive campaign debriefs about the most critical lessons learned, and what they mean for how we do our work in 2022 and beyond.

Strategy Sessions:

🎯 Digging Deeper 1: Disrupting Race Power, and Privilege Dynamics in all Phases of the 360 Ballot Measure Lifecycle – IN PERSON ONLY with Estevan Munoz-Howard, Jordan Schott, and Omaid Zabih

So many organizers face the issues of race, power, and privilege dynamics within their campaigns without any resources, tools, or coaching to proactively address these challenges. Join us to learn how to use BISC’s Declaration of Equity + Accountability to disrupt these harmful dynamics in all the various phases of campaign and coalition work.

🎯 Digging Deeper 2: Exploring Healing, Justice and Why it Matters So Much to Direct Democracy – IN PERSON ONLY with Maria Perez and Itohan Ighodaro

The definition of healing justice continues to evolve and grow, just as we do. Join us and learn about what healing justice is, how it’s being defined, measured, and used by movement leaders and organizations from a community and ecosystem lens, so you can apply those learnings in your own work.

🎯 Digging Deeper 3: What Do You Need to Run an Equitable + Winning Ballot Measure Campaign? – IN PERSON ONLY with Marsha Donat and Eliana Ramirez-Vaughn

What does it really take to run an equitable ballot measure campaign with an expanded definition of winning? In this interactive workshop, participants will utilize BISC’s Coalition and Power Analysis Tool to assess the holistic capacities needed for winning and equitable ballot measure campaigns. We’ll also have a discussion about how we can leverage our collective power as a movement to fill needed capacity gaps so we can continue to win and build sustainable power.

💥 Protecting the Will of the People: How We Can Work Together to #DefendDirectDemocracy with Gina Moore, Richard Von Glahn, Meg Bostrom, Arekia S. Bennett-Scott

In recent years, a number of politicians have tried to undermine ballot initiatives that voters already approved. Now, they are trying to make it harder for voters to propose and pass ballot initiatives altogether. In this session, you’ll learn more about this unprecedented trend and hear directly from BISC and state campaign leaders who are working in the field to protect our freedoms to make decisions through the ballot. You’ll also learn all about the current research being done on these issues and get a mini-training on how to use voter research and messaging in your own work!

🎯 Digging Deeper 4: Proactive Defense + Movement Lawyering: Creating Stronger and More Equitable Campaigns – IN PERSON ONLY with Kentiya Orange and Emma Olson Sharkey

In part one of this session, you’ll learn about legislative attacks to direct democracy and discuss how we can defend against those attacks. In part two, we’ll explore how building a more equitable relationship between experts on ballot measures and political-legal processes, campaign leaders, and the communities they serve can help to sustain movement-building and redefine the win.

🎯 Digging Deeper 5: Campaign Tactics + Lessons Learned: Working Together to Adapt and Adjust in 2022- IN PERSON ONLY with Brad Christian-Sallis, Julian Camera, and Amber England

🎯 Digging Deeper 6: From Dumpster Fire to “On Fire!” – Tools for Strategic Alignment and Collaboration – IN PERSON ONLY
with Mila Al-Ayoubi, Corrine Rivera Fowler, and Alex Gomez

We’ve all been part of campaigns that can best be described as dumpster fires. The lack of real collaboration that allows for shared analysis and collective effort needed for high functioning coalitions is often the cause. In this session, you’ll learn how we can bring together funders, practitioners, and community leaders into the type of alignment necessary to truly shift the systems standing in the way of near and long-term successes and wins!
