Grounded in Purpose and Full of Gratitude

Mi gente –

As we continue to navigate through the complex challenges laid out before us because of the results of this election season, I am clear of two things: I will do everything in my power to protect the ones I love and build a world worthy of my daughter. I head into this week of rest and giving thanks grounded in purpose and full of gratitude.

This election was never just about winning issues on the ballot — it was about the community we built and the care we showed each other throughout this journey. This year has been filled with beautiful acts of solidarity, glimmers of hope, and finding moments of joy — and through it all we demonstrated what it means to truly stand by one another.

Whether it was gathering signatures in our communities to put lifesaving issues on the ballot, volunteers showing up at a phone bank after a long work day, or campaign leaders working tirelessly to deliver for their communities, we took care of each other. The ballot measure campaigns we worked hand in hand with this year became a testament to our shared commitment to not just improving the lives of our people and communities, but to doing so in a way that was compassionate and driven by the belief that every person’s dignity matters.

BISC is deeply grateful for you — our partners, our funders, and the members of our beloved community. We watched you give of your time, your resources, and your hearts. Your belief that we deserve to live in an equitable and just world helped power us. You kept your faith in the possibility of change, even when the road was uncertain. Together, we are part of a powerful movement that, win or lose, reshaped the conversation around critical issues like reproductive freedom, economic justice, marriage equality, defending direct democracy, and so much more.

While the political landscape is certainly divided, one thing is clear: the people want progressive policies and will come out to vote for them. We are thankful for the voters who came out to make their voices heard on ballot measures. They proved that democracy is alive — that they are ready to make their communities better and that they trust us to fight for their futures.

As we gather this week with family and friends to give thanks or take time to be alone and rest,  let’s hold close how we lifted each other up — even when it’s hard — with joyful hearts. We are stronger because of the coalitions we built, and we are incredibly proud of the work we did together. The only way through the rocky waters ahead is together.

I keep coming back to these words from freedom fighter Ella Baker: “Give light and people will find the way.” Let us be the light that people are drawn to and find irresistible so that everyone thrives.

Thank you for being BISC’s light and inspiration.

¡Adelante!
