RELEASE: Defending direct democracy is a part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy

WASHINGTON — In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center reflected on the importance of protecting direct democracy and addressing the attacks on racial justice and civil rights.

Ballot Initiative Strategy Center Executive Director Chris Melody Fields Figueredo issued the following statement:

“Over 50 years later and we are still fighting the battle against racial injustice and attacks against civil rights that Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to. We have seen Republican legislators pass cruel and discriminatory legislation as a way to control our constitutional right to vote, our right to choose, and our right to use our voices.”

“Dr. King fought for equality and racial justice through civil rights, and it is in our hands to honor his legacy. Ballot measures are a critical part of building an inclusive, participatory, and thriving democracy. Empowering and educating voters on the importance of ballot measures is one of the fundamental ways we can defend direct democracy and show the people have the power to leave lasting infrastructure for continued social change.”
