WASHINGTON  — Ahead of President Trump’s return to the oval office, the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center (BISC) encourages voters to remain steadfast in their dedication to people-powered democracy, especially at the state and local level.

BISC’s Executive Director, Chris Melody Fields Figueredo, issued the following statement:

“Our country faces unprecedented levels of partisanship, but I am certain that our vision for equity and justice for all people will prevail. As proven by our state and local ballot measure victories in 2024, progressive issues transcend party lines. This November, voters took power into their own hands to legislate directly on the issues they care about: reproductive freedom, economic justice, civil rights, and the integrity of our democracy. We experienced wins that:

  • Raised the minimum wage in Arkansas and Missouri;
  • Protected marriage equality in Colorado and California;
  • Safeguarded reproductive rights in Arizona, Missouri, Colorado, Maryland, Montana, New York and Nevada;
  • Defended and funded public education in Colorado, Kentucky, Nebraska and Utah; and
  • Blocked attacks to direct democracy in Arizona and North Dakota

“No matter what the next four years may bring, BISC will make ballot measures love letters to our people and work to protect them from harm. We will also support the dedicated leaders, organizers, and campaigns who continue to drive people-powered policies that improve people’s lives. We will build on the momentum created over the last several election cycles to build a world where people are treated with dignity and thrive. With ballot measures, we have the power and agency to support and protect our communities — for us, there is no off year.

Direct democracy is the light that will guide us through the uncertainty and move us forward.”
